“Ethical coffee” has become a popular phrase. It appears on packaging, in marketing materials, and across cafe menus with increasing frequency. But what does it actually mean – and how can you tell whether it is substance or just messaging?

The Problem with Vague Claims

The coffee industry, like many global supply chains, has a complex relationship with the communities that sit at the very beginning of it. Farmers and growers – often in countries with limited economic infrastructure – produce the raw ingredient for a multi-billion-pound global market, while frequently earning below a living income.

“Ethical” sourcing, without independent verification, can mean almost anything. It can be a brand narrative rather than a demonstrable standard. This is why certification matters – not as a marketing exercise, but as a framework that requires real evidence and ongoing accountability.

Fairtrade: A Foundation, Not a Box to Tick

Fairtrade certification is one of the most recognised and independently verified standards in the coffee industry. It guarantees that farmers are paid a minimum price that provides stability, regardless of fluctuations in the global commodity market. On top of this, a Fairtrade Premium is paid – additional funds that farming communities control and invest as they see fit, whether that is in education, healthcare, infrastructure, or cooperative development.

Carbon Neutral: Eight Years and Counting

Coffee production, roasting, packaging, and distribution all carry a carbon footprint. Carbon neutral status means that footprint has been measured across the full operation and offset – so that the net impact on the climate is zero.

We have held Carbon Neutral Britain certification for eight years in a row. This is not a one-time achievement but an ongoing commitment – one that requires us to track and report our emissions every year and continue finding ways to reduce them at source as well as offset what remains.

It is worth being clear about what carbon neutral means in the current context. Offsetting is part of the picture, but reducing emissions in the first place is the direction of travel. We continue to look at every part of our operation with this in mind.

B Corp: The Wider Framework

B Corp certification sits across everything. Rather than assessing one element of a business – its sourcing, say, or its environmental impact in isolation – it evaluates how a company performs across the board: supply chain, governance, workers, community, and environment.

It is a rigorous, independent process that requires documentation, evidence, and a score above a minimum threshold to pass. Achieving certification is not the end of the process – B Corps are reassessed regularly and expected to continue improving their score over time.

For Indigo Valley, becoming a Certified B Corporation has given structure to values and practices that were already part of the business. It has not changed what we do – it has deepened the accountability around it.
