Human trafficking is happening all around us. Victims are often hidden away, but it is possible you will encounter individuals or situations of concern.

In this post we look at some of the facts behind what makes modern slavery such a problem around the world.

Facts about Modern Slavery

Modern slavery in our society might look different than you imagine. Do any of these facts make you think differently about who might be a victim?

40.3 million people are trapped in modern slavery
Human trafficking vs people smuggling
British nationals are the largest percentage of victims in the UK
Human trafficking does not require international travel

Numbers in slavery

40.3 million people worldwide are in modern slavery

24.9 million are in forced labour

15.4 million people are in forced marriages.

Children in slavery

Globally it is estimated that one in four victims of modern slavery are children.

In the UK just under half of referrals to the National Referral Mechanism (47%) were individuals who claimed they were exploited as children.

Forced Labour

Of the 24.9 million victims of forced labour, 16 million people are exploited in the private sector including in domestic work, construction and agriculture.

4.8 million people are victims of forced sexual exploitation, and 4 million are in forced labour imposed by state authorities.

Women & Girls in slavery

Women and girls account for 99% of victims in the commercial sex industry and 58% in other sectors.
